The activity diagram is the pie chart in the Orscana app “My horse” screen. There are two buttons underneath the pie chart. These allow you to select the period the chart refreshes to. How do I understand the Wellbeing diagram?

The wellbeing diagram allows you to check if your horse is in his/her comfort zone. If the indicator is close to 90 degrees (in the middle of the arc) from the indicators “too hot” and “too cold”, then your horse is in his/her comfort zone. So if the diagram is going  red, it means your horse is too hot. If the diagram is blue, your horse is too cold.

On the “my horse” display, what are the temperature and moisture values to the right of the comfort gage?

These values are the actual temperature and moisture read by the sensor. There are up and down arrows. . An arrow facing up means the temperature/moisture gauged by the sensor is going up. An arrow facing down one means the temperature/moisture gauged is going down.

How do I display temperature, moisture and my horse’s activity diagrams?

First, go to “My horse” (check out “How do I access on a horse’s profile?”) Then tap “see details” below the Wellbeing diagram.

How to understand the data in the diagrams?

The chart shows the sensor information over time for the following three settings:

  1. Temperature: the white line indicates the average temperature measured in an hour, on an ongoing basis
  2. Moisture: the light blue line indicates the average moisture measured in an hour, on an ongoing basis
  3. Activity: Is shown as a histogram, each grey bar represents the horse’s activity during each selected hour. The higher it is, the more your horse has moved during that hour. If there is no bar, it means your horse has been standing still, or he/she was not wearing a rug with a sensor.

In the “My horse” screen, what are the icon functions at the top right of the screen?

  1. The first one from the left is your sensor’s battery level
  2. The one in the middle is the icon allowing you to start the location system. Once it is on, wait for few seconds, the appropriate sensor will start to flash (both green and red lights)

FAQ about Orscana

What does the  Orscana sensor do?

The sensor measures the ambient temperature and moisture for the horse (between the rug and the horse). It is therefore important to understand both the highest and lowest temperature to understand the comfort zone for each horse. These levels depend on a number of different parameters (breed, age, etc.) but we can estimate accurately for different types of horses based on 3 factors: a horse’s age, coat condition and physical condition.

Orscana also measures a horses activity in the stable, paddock and in transit.

How do I know if my horse is in his/her comfort zone?

To know if your horse is in its comfort zone or too hot or too cold, check the wellbeing diagram in the horse’s profile. To access it, please do the follow these steps:

  1. Open the Orscana app
  2. Tap the toolbar to the top left
  3. Select “My horses”
  4. Tap the horses profile you wish to check

Once you’re in the horse’s profile, look at the comfort zone. If the arrow is close to 90 degrees from the indicators “too hot” or “too cold”, your horse is in his/her comfort zone.

The app is telling me that the horse is not in his/her comfort zone, what should I do?

If the app is showing you that the horse is not in his/her comfort zone, he or she is too hot or too cold. If he/she is too hot, just take off one of the rugs, or change to a lighter rug. If he/she is too cold, just add another rug or put on a heavier weight rug.

How do I know if my horse is too hot or too cold?

Once you are on your horse’s profile, check the wellbeing diagram. If the arrow is close to 90 degrees from the indicators “too hot” or “too cold”, your horse is in his/her comfort zone.

Can the sensor detect disease or injury?

No, the sensor is for temperature, moisture and your horse’s activity whilst resting in his/her stable, in the paddock or in transit.

Does Orscana advise me about which rug to put on my horse?

Orscana does advise you about which type of rug to put on depending on the weather.
